Drawing Breath workshop

March  21st
Saturday
10 -1
£21

The workshop is concerned with exploring the ability to see and respond with drawing without preconception or assumed judgement.

Using a range of materials such as ink, clay, soft and oil pastels, tools such as feathers, sticks, stones, shells, pens, brushes and fingers we feel our way towards making honest and sincerely felt responses to the nude model.

The model moves and dances to music for over 2 hours after an initial warm up in mark making using the tools. There are many times when the model is still for people to draw.

All materials are included in the price although you will need to bring 2 or 3 rolls of lining wallpaper to draw on.

Tutor is  Fran Quinlan

Embroidery Workshops

Hand-stitched embroidery: step-by-step workshops

A series of monthly workshops, each one concentrating on a distinctive, traditional embroidery technique.  Each workshop is a hands-on, practical session with participants learning the key embroidery stitches used for each technique and then creating their own sample of work to inspire further ideas. Small groups ensure individual attention.

The workshops will be held on:
Sundays from 1-4 pm,
Starting on February 22nd
£20 per workshop

They are aimed at beginners and upwards, so previous experience is not necessary.

In each workshop, sources of inspiration from both the natural and manmade worlds, along with ways of recording information will be discussed.  So, participants are asked to bring in photographs, postcards, magazine pictures or drawings that they find interesting along with a small sketchbook.

Each session is a stand-alone workshop.  However, anyone able to attend all the sessions will experience using pattern, texture and colour in embroidery, employing a wide range of stitches, and will gain confidence in expressing their own ideas in stitchery.

Materials will be supplied, though there will be a small charge for specialised materials, such as gold metal thread.

£20 per workshop

Workshops:

February 22nd: pattern in embroidery.  Black work: Also called Spanish work as it was brought to England by Queen Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII, though it goes further back to the ancient Egyptians and Persians.

March 22nd: texture in embroidery. Quilting: English, Italian and Trapunto. Dates back to ancient Egypt, India, Persia.

April 19th: texture in embroidery. Gold work: couching, laid work, gold basket-work.  Dates back to Biblical times, important in religious and royal embroidery.

May 17th: colour in embroidery. Jacobean work: using colours in tonal shades. Dates back to the 17th century Stuarts.

June 14th: colour in embroidery. Appliqué work: Dates back to the ancient Egyptians, Persians, Greeks and the Crusades.

July 19th : texture in embroidery.  Mountmellick work: a form of white work dating  from the Irish potato famine.

The tutor, Liz Thomas, is an experienced teacher, textile artist and is passionate about embroidery.  She has a BA Hons in Textiles/ Fashion, specialising in Embroidery, studying under Constance Howard and Christine Risley.
